This weekend is the Great Central Railway in Loughborough Diesel Gala. In total there will be seven locomotives in operation including two visitors.
In the home fleet the Great Central Railway will have in service is their class 25, 31, 33, 45 and a class 47. The Great Central Railway have one locomotive making their debut & one visiting locomotive.
Class 50 50017 ‘Royal Oak’ will be making her debut on the Great Central Railway after being bought by the GCR purchased her in February 2019. The Class 50s were built to haul passenger trains at 100mph, initially on the non-electrified section of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Scotland. Entering service in 1967/8, many of the class saw operation on British Rail until the early 1990s. Many have subsequently entered preservation.
Class 14 D9537 will be visiting the Great Central Railway courtesy of D9537 Locomotive Group.The 56 diesel-hydraulic locomotives of the class had a relatively short service life with British Railways, but subsequently enjoyed careers in private ownership in industry. Since entering preservation, the class have been popular with enthusiasts and are often known as ‘Teddy Bears’.
Class 37 37714 has been withdrawn from the gala lineup as the locomotive is currently away from the Great Central and is receiving attention. Unfortunately she will not be ready for the gala.
On Saturday Night of the gala there will be Saturday Night services with Class 50 50017. The GCR’s own Griddle Car will be open. Orders placed by 5.00pm will be served on the 6.35pm departure from Loughborough Central. The Griddle Car will be serving Spaghetti Bolognese for £6.50, Toad in the Hole for £6.50, Chick Pea and Sweet Potato and Spinach Curry for £6.50 .
Fares for this gala are as followed: Adults are £22 and Children are £11. A family ticket will be for £45 (2 adults & up to 3 children) and a second Family Ticket: £35 (1 adult & up to 3 children). Children under three go for free.
